The following is an excerpt from an article that recently ran in the Enid News and Eagle about 1997 OC alumnus, Michael Sanders:

Sanders selected to educational fellowship program

Michael Sanders, senior adviser with U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Conservation Service, has been selected to participate in the California Agricultural Leadership Foundation’s Washington, D.C., Educational Fellowship Program.

The program is an experiential learning opportunity that brings together representatives from federal policy-making and regulatory organization. Its goal is to educate decision makers on the issues facing California agriculture, as well as foster open communication between this industry and federal entities. The seven-day seminar is designed to provide participants practical, hands-on agriculture experiences.

Sanders was appointed senior advisor to the chief, Natural Resources Conservation Service, in March.

Prior to his most recent appointment, Sanders served as deputy chief of staff to the under secretary for rural development at USDA. He coordinated and consulted with the agency’s 47 state directors and served as liaison between under secretary and various offices within USDA. He served as official envoy and spokesman for USDA at rural development fund presentation ceremonies, conferences and events across the country. In this position, Sanders also assisted in shaping, planning, and implementing rural development policies and strategy and coordinated special events and travel.

Before serving as deputy chief of staff, Sanders was confidential assistant to the director of legislative and public affairs, USDA Rural Development.

He is a graduate of Kingfisher High School and is a history and pre-law graduate from Oklahoma Christian University in Edmond. He parents are Rusty and Fran Sanders, of Kingfisher.
