"Greeting Gang" to give warm welcome

The day college freshmen move into their dorms usually causes much fear and excitement. Volunteers at Oklahoma Christian University try to make the transition a little easier with a tradition that began last year.

A group of more than 80 volunteers from the campus community hope to calm the anxiety of newcomers.
Members of the "Greeting Gang" will be stationed in front of the university's main entrance and each of the residence halls on Saturday. Their goal is to make new students feel welcome, help them unload their belongings and provide refreshments throughout the day.

"People have a lot of stuff to move in these days, so anything we can do to make a good impression and help them out, that's what we're trying to do," Jeff Bennett, associate dean of students, said. "It's really a helpful thing, making people feel welcome and showing hospitality from the campus community."

Bennett is still accepting volunteers. Anyone who wants to join the OC students, faculty, staff, alumni and local residents in this effort will receive a pizza lunch and free t-shirt. To sign up, call 425-5903 or e-mail by Friday.
