The American Marketing Association of Oklahoma City hosted an event showcasing how the City of Oklahoma City is marketing itself for the 21st Century on January 8th. The event featured Mayor Mick Cornett, Former Mayor Kirk Humphreys, and Greater Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce President Roy Williams in a panel discussion. OC Associate Professor of Marketing and Management, Dr. Burt Smith, was chosen to moderate the panel. The panel provided their insight into how the City of Oklahoma City has developed and nurtured its brand to attract new industry, increase tourism, and to retain college graduates who have in the past moved to another city to start their careers. The event was an American Marketing Association exclusive, pre-empting the greatly anticipated State of the City address to be delivered by Mayor Cornett on January 15th.

“When we decided we wanted to host an event of this magnitude, we immediately thought of having Dr. Smith serve as the moderator.” Said Brian Blake, Vice President of Programming for the American Marketing Association of Oklahoma City. “In addition to being an award-winning past president of our chapter, Dr. Smith has served on the board of directors of the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce and is a recognized leader in the community. He has literally shared the stage with that level of leadership, so having him represent the chapter on the stage with our panelists just made sense.”

Dr. Smith has been an active member of the Oklahoma City Chapter of the American Marketing Association since 1995. He served two terms as president of the chapter and is the only president to have won a National Chapter Excellence Award. In a surprise announcement as part of its 2008 Excellence in Marketing Awards Ceremony, the board of directors honored him as the first-ever “Volunteer of the Year” for his service to the chapter and his contributions to the marketing community. Smith maintains an active presence in the business community as a way to help ensure his students benefit from relevant, ongoing, “real world” experience. Along with Dr. Kerianne Roper, Smith is the faculty co-sponsor of the OC Student Chapter of the American Marketing Association.

“What I’m really looking forward to now,” Said Smith, “Is seeing our former students make their mark on the marketing profession. I can’t wait to be in the audience one of these days to see one of our marketing grads be recognized for their contributions to the business community.”
