Former Wal-Mart Executive to Address OC Grads

Donald Soderquist, former Senior Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer of Wal-Mart, will deliver the charge to the 145 degree candidates at Oklahoma Christian University’s fall commencement on Friday, December 14.

Commencement will take place at 2 p.m. in Hardeman Auditorium located in the Garvey Center on the Oklahoma Christian Campus.

Commencement will include 90 bachelor degree candidates from OC’s three colleges - arts and sciences, biblical studies, and professional studies. Also included in the graduation exercises will be 51 degree candidates from OC’s Fast Track MBA program along with four from the Master of Ministry program.

Soderquist became known as the “Keeper of the Culture” at Wal-Mart after the passing of Sam Walton. He has written two books, “The Wal-Mart Way” and “Live, Learn, Lead—To Make a Difference” to share with others his principles on business ethics and his philosophy on life.

In 1996 he was inducted into the Retailing Hall of Fame for his exemplary career that includes six years as President and CEO of Ben Franklin, in addition to his tenure at Wal-Mart.

John Brown University created the Soderquist Center for Business Leadership and Ethics in his honor in 1998. The Center provides ethical leadership training for undergraduates and masters students.

Soderquist will be bestowed an honorary degree during the commencement ceremony.

Also being honored is Virgil R. Trout, a man who has dedicated his life to spreading the Gospel around the World.

Trout has been preaching and lecturing for 62 years. He has delivered addresses in 44 states and Asia, Africa, Europe and Canada. He will receive an honorary degree for his work with the Church and the dedication to the communities in which he has worked and lived.
