Oklahoma Christian University is proud to feature Sommer Billings in the Alumni Spotlights section of AlumNews. Sommer graduated OC in 2002 and is currently an English Teacher and Golf Coach at Tulsa Memorial High School.
What advice would you give to current or prospective students? Try to get to know as many people as you can while at OC. Try not to hang out with only the people in your club or only the people from your church. I realized after I graduated that I spent all of my time only with the same group of people and I wished that I would have tried to branch out of my social circle more.
What was the most important thing you learned while attending Oklahoma Christian University? I learned the value of true Christian friendships and relationships. I was constantly encouraged and uplifted by my friends and adult mentors while at OC. I still keep in touch with my relationships from OC and I recommend everyone take advantage of the amazing Christian relationships while at OC.
What is your passion in life? My passion in life is serving others. As a teacher in a high school, I feel it is my passion to serve my students with a Christian attitude. I also love serving others through my cooking, which I love to do. I recently just started my own business "Sommertime's Sweets," which is a dessert delivery business www.sommertimessweets.com.
I strive to serve others with a Christian heart the same way Christ served us.
What is your favorite memory from or favorite thing about OC? My favorite memory would have to be when I was the executive director of the Spring Sing 2002 show. It was the single most exciting experience of my life. I loved getting involved with all of the aspects of the show and especially hanging out with my bff- Bob Lashley! The craziest thing I did while I was the director was grabbing the microphone from one of the hosts on the Saturday night show and singing along with them my favorite song from Grease- "We Go Together". It was awesome, my friends still make fun of me and are embarassed when I bring up that memory!
What advice would you share with a soon to be graduate of OC about "the real world"? No matter what ALWAYS stick to your Christian morals and beliefs. I have been tempted in many ways from the people of the world, but always trust in God and believe that He will give you the strength to overcome obstacles. You must also surround yourself with positive Christian people to maintain the Christian lifestyle Christ wants us to lead. Also, stay connected with the OC community. It was such an important part of my life that I enjoy staying connected with the campus.
