Harold Fletcher was the first faculty member hired for Oklahoma Christian University. He and his wife Mary Helon came to Central Christian College, the original name for Oklahoma Christian, in 1950.

The Fletchers’ impact can be seen throughout the music department and the University as a whole. One of Harold Fletcher’s most visible contributions to Oklahoma Christian has been the composition of the Alma Mater, “Hail to Oklahoma Christian” which is still sung each Monday during chapel.

“The Fletchers are Oklahoma Christian legends and have been heroes to throughout OC’s history because of their love, service and encouragement,” says President John deSteiguer. “Harold was not only in charge of the College’s music department - he was the music department for years. This Center is a legacy to the lives and impact of Harold and Mary Helon Fletcher.”

Fletcher retired from full-time teaching in 1993, but continued to teach music history and music literature courses as an adjunct professor through his final class on December 4, 2014. Before his retirement, he taught music history, literature and theory, founded and directed the Chorale, and wrote and directed many of its musicals. He also was an ardent advocate of civil rights and human rights on the OC campus in the turbulent 1960s.

During his association with Oklahoma Christian, Fletcher was awarded Oklahoma Christian’s Gaylord Chair of Distinguished Teaching, was inducted in to the university’s Master Teacher Hall of Fame, and was honored as a Distinguished Honorary Alumnus. In November 2014 he was awarded the President’s Medal of Distinction.

Fletcher’s wife Mary Helon, who passed away in 2001, served as a piano instructor at Oklahoma Christian for many years. The connection between the Fletcher family and Oklahoma Christian continues through their son Dr. John Fletcher, Professor of Music who conducts the Symphonic Band and the Oklahoma Community Orchestra.

The Fletcher Center for Music is funded by their family, friends, and admirers. Donated funds go toward music scholarships, activities, and programs. They also help in furnishing and maintaining our music facilities.
